Pediatric Immunology
A pediatric immunologist (allergist) is an allergy and asthma doctor with specialized training for, and experience in, working with children. Dr. Michael Maloney, founder of our clinic, is Board Certified in immunology and pediatrics. Additionally, our staff is very experienced in working with children of all ages.
What is Immunology?
Simply put, immunology refers to medical services related to the human immune system. Allergy and asthma reactions occur because the body’s immune system is working to fight an allergen. People with immune systems that “over react” need the services of an immunologist.
An immunologist works with patients to manage and control allergic reactions. Common allergy related symptoms in children are asthma, hives, hay fever, itching, rash, bumps, and blotchy redness of skin.
What Does a Pediatric Immunologist Do?
A pediatric immunologist works with your child to determine the causes (triggers) for allergic reactions. When the triggers have been identified the allergist can develop an action plan. The action plan may include prescription drugs, over the counter medications, behavioral changes such as avoiding certain foods or substances, and changing environmental conditions such as home air filtration and housekeeping.
Children suffering from any allergy symptoms can benefit from visiting an allergy and asthma clinic. Children with a history of severe allergic reactions should receive regular care from a pediatric immunologist. Severe allergic reactions can cause death , which typically is the result of anaphylaxis.
Children with immune system disorders can have a higher than normal frequency of other medical problems. Some of the types of infections and problems include sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections and thrush.
Managing Allergies and Asthma in Children
With proper care these problems can often be prevented, and almost always controlled. With a customized action plan and parent commitment we can provide solutions to help children cope with their allergies.
If your child suffers from allergy or asthma, we invite you to schedule an appointment with a pediatric allergist. Our allergy and asthma clinic is always accepting new patients.
